Review of the work

The Animal Farm is a fable about the power during the second world war. The work has a simple and easy to understand for all ages language, however, isn’t directed to children. The book is a satire of communism in the former USSR and the Stalinist government. For that George uses animal figures representing political figures.

The story begins on Solar Grange , when Major, an old pig, gathers all the animals to tell about his idea to create a revolution , so that the animals do not suffer more oppression of humans. For him all animals were equal and capable of being self-reliant and live together in harmony .

Shortly after Major dies and his friends pigs , Snowball and Napoleon , assume its ideas and deploy " Animalism " . The pigs were smarter because they could read . Meetings were held and the seven commandments to be followed have been created , and was created by a hymn, they all sang.

The commandments said :

1 - Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy .

2 - Whatever goes upon four legs , or has wings , is a friend .

3 - No animal shall wear clothes .

4 - No animal shall sleep in a bed.

5 - No animal shall drink alcohol.

6 - No animal shall kill any other animal.

7 - All animals are equal.

After some confusion the owner of the farm, Mr. Jone , is expelled and the farm is now called Animal Farm. Thereafter all start caring for and administering the farm and all worked for their own sustenance. All went well, but ambition began to take care of the pigs, and they thought they were better than others. They began to disobey the commandments living better and more comfortably, always justifying that they deserved privileges due to his mental superiority. With that initial idea of revolution begins to be distorted, so pigs began to behave like humans. They came to live in the house of Mr. Jones and did the same things that its owner had. For that "added" amendments to the commandments which were:

4 - No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets.

5 - No animal shall drink alcohol to excess.

6 - No animal shall kill another animal without cause.

7 - All animals are equal but some are more equal than others

The behavior of pigs caused and causes indignation, because it causes the reader to reflect on our actions. So what causes the revolt is the similarity of our actions and behavior of pigs.

Book Summary

The story goes on Solar Grange and revolves around the Major, a pig of 12 old, who dreams of living free without having to work for men. He says it should be done Animism, which would be an analogy to communism. Animism said that all animals should work for themselves, and not, being slave of men. Major dies and Snow-ball and Napoleon take the idea of revolution. One day the owners forgot to feed the animals, which led to a revolt in Granja.

Main Characters

Animal Farm’s Characters have a lot of similarities with the Russian communism system, which occurred in 1917 with the leadership of Vladimir Lenin. In other words, the characters are based on some important people that participated in the Russian Revolution. Here are the characters: 

Mr. Jones: He is the human in the history, he runs the farm poorly, leaving his animals starving, being a good owner occasionally, later in the novel that would cause a rebellion in the farm. He clearly represents the Tsar Nicholas II, who was a brutal and cruel with his opponents, this was the cause of the Russian Revolution.

Old Major: He represents the wise in the Novel, the Boar has a vision of the utopian Socialism, the inspiration that the animals needed for the rebellion. He dies leaving his teachings to Snowball and Napoleon. He is based on Karl Marx, German politician and economist of the XIX century.

Snowball: Based on Leon Trotsky, one of the leaders of the Red October. He, as Trotsky, is an enthuastic pig who really wants to make the life better in the Farm, he inspired himself in the words of the Old Major, as Trotsky was with Marx.

Napoleon: He was one of the leaders too, but he was not smart and good speaker as Snowball, his ambition for power made him kill everyone in his way (with his nine loyal dogs), he represents Joseph Stalin, who was not as good as Trotsky, using the KGB he reached the president of Russia

These are the main characters, as in the Russian Revolution, but there are other animals that also represent other things in communist Russia.

The raven Moses represents the religion, he used to say about the Sugarcandy Mountain, where animals go when died. The dogs are the KGB, who used their strength to take the power. Squealer is the Pig who spreads Napoleon’s ideas and had a strong power of persuasion. And the others that don’t represent a single person but represent a group of people in Russia. Some facts about the life of George Orwell:

• He has joined the POUM militia with Trotskyist ideology against Francisco Franco in the Spanish Civil War

• During the Spanish War George was shot in the neck reaching vocal cords, so he had changed his voice, slightly effeminate

• In the 2nd world war Orwell worked as a war correspondent for the BBC

Eric Arthur Blair was born in Bengal in India, on June 25, 1903, but he became famous by the name of George Orwell, it was a pseudonymous.

He was a writer and journalist, and his famous work was Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four.

About his family, his father was a British civil servant, and George spent his first days of life in India because his father was stationed there. George’s mother brought him and his older sister, Marjorie, to England about a year after his birth and settled in Henley-on-Thames. His father stayed behind in India and rarely visited.

The first word that he said was "beastly", not a normal first word for a child, special that this word was his first. He had many problems when he was a child, like bronchitis.

  He started to write poems with four years old, and with eleven years old he wrote a poem that was published in a journal, and he was becoming famous.Orwell is also known for his insights about the political implications of the use of language.

  Animal Farm was his famous novel and an anti-Soviet satire in a pastoral setting featuring two pigs as its     protagonists. They were based to represent Josef Stalin and Leon Trotsky. It brought Orwell great acclaim and money. Four years later, Orwell published another work, Nineteen Eighty-Four. This work also gave him acclaim but unfortunately, he could not enjoy much, he was in his later battle against tuberculosis.

   OnJanuary 21 of 1950, Eric Blair died, in a Hospital in London with only 46 years; he was married with Eileen O'Shaughnessy until she passed away in 1945. In 1944 they adopted a son and named him Richard Horatio Blair. And in 1950 he proposed to Sonia Brownell, but he stayed married only a few days since he died.
